Anikó Szűcs is a theater scholar based in New York whose work explores the intersections of performance, history, and cultural memory. Born and raised in Hungary, she teaches at Queens College and researches Central and Eastern European theater, politics, and performance.
As the recipient of the 2026 Tulipán Art & Culture Award, Anikó will organize Exhibition and Panel on the Squat Theatre, a series of public events marking the 50th anniversary of Squat Theatre's arrival in New York City. Beginning with a retrospective exhibition and public panel featuring former company members, scholars, and critics, the project brings together archival materials, photographs, performance artifacts, and firsthand perspectives to celebrate the legacy of one of the most influential Hungarian American theater companies.
In 2027, the anniversary year, the program will continue with a performance event at The Segal Center at CUNY featuring reenactments of scenes from productions by Kassák Studió in Budapest and Squat Theatre in New York. Through exhibitions, performances, and public conversations, Anikó's project preserves the legacy of a groundbreaking ensemble of Hungarian émigré artists while introducing new audiences to an important chapter in theater history.
