With great joy, we’re excited to share that the Tulipán Foundation recently hosted a Hungarian Carnival in collaboration with the Arany János Hungarian School. With 120 participants and a lively atmosphere, the event brought the vibrant spirit of Farsang—Hungary’s beloved carnival tradition—to life for all in attendance.
Families arrived dressed in their carnival best, embracing the festive traditions of mask-wearing, music, and dance. The event kicked off with a parade of costumes, where children proudly displayed their outfits, delighting attendees with their creativity.
Throughout the day, everyone enjoyed a variety of activities, including folk dancing, traditional games, and arts and crafts stations. Participants crafted busó masks using cardboard, real fur, and homemade materials, alongside lace masks and noise-making drums made from pumpkins and sheepskin.
These workshops offered an immersive experience in Hungarian craftsmanship, blending creativity with cultural tradition. Enhancing the experience further were Árvai Anikó and Mihály Vetró, recipients of the Young Master of Folk Art Award, as well as teachers from the Nádudvar Folk Handicrafts Vocational High School, Hungary’s leading institution for traditional craftsmanship education and Tulipán grant recipient. Their expertise enriched the workshops, allowing participants to connect deeply with the essence of Hungarian folk art.
The event also showcased an exhibit of original busó artifacts imported from Mohács, Hungary, providing families with a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of carnival traditions. As the lively tunes of the Fészer Band and Holdvilág Band filled the air, participants were guided by folk dance leader Melinda Török through energetic routines that encouraged everyone to join in the fun.
The celebratory atmosphere reached its peak during the doughnut-eating contest, where children eagerly competed, filling the room with laughter and excitement. Meanwhile, the faculty from the Hungarian school prepared fresh doughnuts, adding a deliciously sweet touch to the festivities.
The Hungarian Children’s Carnival was a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and tradition, bringing families in New York together through creativity and play. This event beautifully reflected the Tulipán Foundation’s mission to nurture artistic expression, preserve cultural heritage, and foster community connections. We look forward to continuing this cherished tradition and celebrating with even more families in the years to come.
